Give Your Teenager some Responsibility

Is your teenager driving you mad? Wants more space? A bigger wardrobe? Insisting on getting rid of the farm nativity scene on the wall that’s been there since they were four?

You can’t blame them really, can you? Your child’s going through a stage in their life where they want to start to take control over their environment – ok, actually they want to take control over their whole life and probably yours too - so letting them be involved in home improvement projects is a great way for your teenager to start experimenting with their own style.

Home repair and improvement is a big task, so why not get all the help you can? Maybe your child will find their calling in home improvement projects and become a world famous interior decorator, you just never know.

Start your teenager off with bedroom duties. Designing their new bedroom wont just be a fun exercise for them, they’re also going to learn about being responsible (which is good for you) and they’re rewarded at the end with an amazing new bedroom they can brag to their friends about. Everyone win’s.

Set Boundaries

Obviously you will need to set boundaries. No floor to ceiling black walls. No nudity. No ‘smokers corner’. No bar. Nothing that will offend you, your other children, or your guests.

The not so little anymore darling needs to realize this is your home, you pay the bills and until such time as they want to contribute to the mortgage, you get final say. If they don’t like it, let them know the decorator that did the home repair and improvements on their grandma’s house is available, and just see how long it takes for them to change their mind.

Provide Information and Inspiration

Provide your teenager with some home repair how to books and magazines to give them some inspiration. It’s a good idea to sit down and go through them together so you know you’re on the same page with ideas and concepts, or at least somewhere within the same book!

Bonding Time

Home improvement projects can be a stressful time for families, but wouldn’t it be nice if you could all pitch together and have a great time helping each other out instead of feeling like all the pressure is on you? Put some pressure on the kids for once!

You’ll find that the whole home repair and improvement experience will be a great way to spend time with the kids and bring you together as a family. Nothing like a Saturday trip to the hardware picking out colors with the kids! As long as your paying for lunch and anything else they see along the way they’ll be in.

Remember, Teenagers Know EVERYTHING.

Who needs a home repair how to book when you’ve got a teenager? But seriously, teenager jokes aside, your kids might just have some great ideas for your home improvement projects. They’re the one’s out there in the shopping malls and trendy places while you’re stuck at work all day, so tell them to keep their eye out for great looks and designs so you can go check them out yourself later.

Teenagers are becoming more and more design and fashion savvy, so you might be surprised with the great ideas your kids will come up with. How could they not know great style when they spend half their lives glued to the TV watching the likes of Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl in her Fifth Avenue penthouse and those spoilt Laguna Beach kids soaking it up in their ocean view Jacuzzis. Just make sure the kids are aware that if they want an ocean view Jacuzzi, they better start saving their pocket money!
